Entering Georgia

The road from Uralsk to Tbilisi goes through Russia and the Upper Lars crossing. Be ready for two borders.

  • Visa-free for up to a yearRussian and Kazakhstan citizens don't need a visa for Georgia and can stay up to 365 days. An international passport is required — a Russian internal passport is not accepted.
  • Mandatory health insurance since 1 January 2026A policy for the whole trip: at least $5,000 for outpatient and $30,000 for inpatient care. Without it you may be refused entry or fined 300 lari. Buy the policy before you leave.
  • Transit through RussiaYou'll first enter Russia — see the Russia entry guide, including the RuID app.
  • ChildrenA child needs their own passport. If a child travels with one parent or without parents, bring a notarised consent to travel from the parent(s).
  • Debts can block your exitIn both Russia and Kazakhstan, debts under enforcement proceedings (loans, alimony, fines, taxes) can lead to a ban on leaving the country — and you only find out at the border. Check a couple of days before your trip: it takes a minute.
